The title - and also the story - of my talk and this article is linking to the the last movie in the Star Wars saga series. Most of you know that there’s the dark empire and the rebels. It can easily be translated to the world of business. We have large incumbents, powerful corporations and small, agile, nimble startups. But in the world of fast, disruptive, digital innovations it seems that - unlike in Star Wars - the small startup rebels have the upper hand and the corporations are too slow to defend themselves and losing their power and status, despite mighty financial and brand war chest. Since the .com and later the Social/Mobile/App revolution this was very much true.

Currently top 5 most valuable (Market Cap) companies in the US are darlings of the Digital/Startup world: Apple, Google (Alphabet), Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook. They have pushed down the traditionals like ExxonMobil, GE and Citibank. But I argue that the time has come for the tables to be turned once again. Corporations are rising to the challenge and employing the same techniques and tools as startups to achieve disruptive escape velocity needed for breakthrough innovations to come to life, evolve and endure. There are many challenges, but also many benefits when a big corpo is mimicking the way of the startups. There’s a lot of adjusting and change management to be done internally, but when things are settled, the battle will get really interesting. And us, consumers will be the winners in any case.

“I think it’s going to be pretty exciting time to be alive” - if I may quote Sal Khan (Khan Academy) in his latest TED Talk - which I also highly recommend you to watch.
